Workman brace sees Garvagh through

Matt Morrison North West Cup
Magherafelt Reds 1-2 Garvagh
Alan Workman 2

Garvagh were on the front foot from the off and Anderson forced the home keeper into a couple of early saves.

McCloskey and Henry both had efforts off target, while the latter had a penalty shout mid way through the half turned down. Doherty and Anderson went close from a Milliken flick on and Mailey couldn’t force the rebound into the net.

On the half time whistle, Garvagh had another penalty appeal when the defender and McCloskey both collided at the front post but again, it was waved away by the referee.

The second half was much the same as the first. Anderson Doherty and McIntyre going close but Garvagh just couldn’t find a way to get their noses in front.

Workman came off the bench and within five minutes put Garvagh ahead, poking home from a corner. It looked like the one goal would win it but, ‘The Reds’ equalised in the 80th minute with their first shot on target. Garvagh settled themselves and scored the winner almost straight away, Workman again finishing from a Brownlow cut back.

Garvagh know they must be more ruthless in the final third as they progress into the next round of the competition.
