Waterstones in Coleraine hosting event to launch Bann Disc

The launch of the 2023 volume of the Bann Disc, the journal of Coleraine Historical Society, will take place on Wednesday 8 November at the Sandel Centre, Knocklynn, Coleraine between 6.30 and 7.30pm. Members and guests are invited to attend the launch where light refreshments will be served and the journal will be available for purchase.
After the launch, the Robert Anderson Memorial Talk will be delivered by Kenneth Wood whose apt theme is Tale of Two Ships – Girona and Wheatear. Visitors are welcome to attend.
The Bann Disc is priced at £10 per copy and the attractive wraparound cover shows a painting of Coleraine Harbour done in the 1920s. An eight-page colour section features illustrations from illuminated address books in the museum service’s keeping and accompanies an article by Helen Perry on the collection and on the background to such books. This is only one of many interesting articles on varied themes in the 2023 Bann Disc which includes, among others, sport, personalities, the arts, the blasting of Downhill tunnel and the tale of a notorious highwayman, all well illustrated. The articles reflect local life at different time periods ranging from an article on bronze age settlements, to a snapshot of Coleraine 200 years ago and to more modern history with an account of the first elections to the Northern Ireland Parliament in 1921.
The journal makes a wonderful addition to the library of anyone interested in the history of Coleraine and the surrounding area, a perfect Christmas present and will fit into an envelope to be posted to friends and family living further away.
The journal will be on sale at the usual local outlets from 9 November. Waterstones in Coleraine are hosting an in-store event from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 18 November with the opportunity to chat to members of Coleraine Historical Society and to purchase the Bann Disc.
