Enda McKaigue (Mallon & Co) David McGaffin (Springwell RC) Paul Boyle (Mallon & Co)

This week Springwell RC can announce their stewardship of the University of Ulster Coleraine Campus 5k. As well as that the final event of the Winter League Trail Series took place, there was a bit of running in the Spanish sunshine, and a very pleasant Saturday morning saw the Springwell members out in force at parkrun.

The University of Ulster Coleraine Campus 5k
Springwell RC are excited to announce that they will be hosting the 2024 University of Ulster Coleraine Campus 5k on Saturday 23rd March 2024. Following on from the success of the 2023 event Mallon & Co Solicitors have once again generously supported the race as the headline sponsors.
There are three races on the night, which will all take place on closed roads within the University of Ulster Campus in Coleraine. Starting at 5:00pm the first race will cater for runners aiming to run a time of 22 minutes or over, the second race at 5:45pm is for those runners aiming to run between 17 and 22 minutes, and the final race at 6:15pm will be for those expecting to run a time of less than 17 minutes.

Any athlete who can run 17 minutes or less for a 5k has trained hard and is well motivated, but just to add a little extra incentive Mallon & Co Solicitors have offered a โ€œbountyโ€ of ยฃ250 to any runner who sets either a new male or female course record on the night. The male record is currently 14:06 and the female record 16:28.
The University of Ulster Coleraine Campus 5k promises to provide an entertaining, challenging and rewarding evening of running for all competitors on the 23rd March.

Sperrin Harriers Winter League Trail Series
The final event of the Sperrin Harriers Winter on Saturday 3rd February saw a last-minute change of venue, as storms Isha and Jocelyn had toppled enough trees at Drum Manor to turn the course into a challenge even for a steeplechaser. So, on Saturday in was a return to the scenic Lough Fea for a 10k race consisting of two and a half laps of the lough. Another strong run from Nicola Frizelle saw her finish 31st in 43:02 with James Hughes 38th in 44:33. Adele Tomb was 44th in 46:32 with Carolyn Crawford 48th in 47:29.
Torremolinos 5k
Saturday 3rd February saw Gary and Catherine Moore in sunny Spain taking on the challenge of a very hilly 5k through the streets of Torremolinos. The start immediately offered a kilometer of climb to raise the heart rate, and there was no rest after that as the race continued ascending through the streets of Torremolinos before a steep descent to the finish line. Catherine finished 62nd overall and third in her age category with a time of 22:59, with Gary 106th in 26:09.
Parkrun
A pleasant Saturday morning saw the Springers spread far and wide, as fifty – nine of them went in search of parkrun adventures at fourteen different venues. Catherine Byers clocked up her 300th parkrun at Netley Abbey parkrun, while six others marked up personal bests on their respective parkrun CV’s.
