Springwell runners compete far and wide across UK

There was just a slight moderation in the number of races this week in order to compose ourselves, before diving headlong into the summer running calendar, but the enthusiasm was still there as the Hill & Dale series reached its conclusion in the Mourne Mountains and the summer Half Marathons started with the Lisburn event, and Springers could be found at parkruns all over these islands. The only country we didn’t visit was the Isle of Man.

Lisburn Half Marathon – Wednesday 19th June

The sun came out for Wednesday evenings races in Lisburn with over 2000 competitors taking to the streets for this very popular event. Ten Springers joined the numbers, with nine of them donning the colours, and one, still immaculately coordinated, pacing for the organisers.

Springwell RC – 175th Shaun Carton 1:43:08, 273rd Conall Doherty 1:48:03, 297th Pauline Mullan 1:49:27, 380th Richard Pollock 1:54:07, 568th Adam Henderson 2:03:10, 636th Alanna Millar 2:07:44, 690th Roberts McKenzie 2:10:55, 748th Helena Dornan, 2:13:59 (PACER), 790th Liz Dowey 2:17:43, 893rd Pauline Duke 2:30:11

Hill & Dale: Drinnahilly – Thursday 20th June

The 10th and final race in the 2024 H&D series was a short and sharp 6km with 26 metres of elevation course in the shadows of Slieve Donard.

Starting in Donard Park, runners raced through Donard Forest heading up to the mast at Drinnahilly before a fast downhill finish along the forest trails back to Donard Park.

An impressive run from Adele Tomb saw her finish10th and 2nd FV50 in 32:58, and in his first H&D race James Hughes finished 143rd in 35:00.

Making his return after an injury sustained at the Millstone race, Conor Duffy nearly missed the start line having taken a serious fall and hit the ground with some authority before the race. Taping himself up, Conor finished 214th in 40:32.

After the race and a quick change, the mountain people convened for a Guinness in O’Hares Pub for the series awards ceremony.

This was also used as a fundraiser for the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team where well over £1,000 was donated from the runners.

This weekend saw sixty – three Springers parkrunning at fourteen different venues with two personal bests recorded. Gary Kendall recorded his at Gunnersbury Parkrun, while Ashley McPhee carved three minutes off her previous best at Ecos parkrun.

Thanks to all the volunteers who make parkrun happen every week. Your efforts are appreciated.
