Spirit of 74 and Friends of Coleraine host celebration dinner for league champions ’74

Causeway Chronicle’s MICHAEL ANDERSON recalls joining his friend David Doherty on the 1974 title celebration around town . . .

My late father Bertie first took me to the games when I was at Primary School.

Straight away I was hooked!

If, for whatever reason, he was unable to take me, my sister Gillian was made to…or else all hell would break loose.

Even though I was a child, I still remember (vaguely) some of those games.

The European Cup game with Dutch giants Feyenoord the following season stands out.

But what I do recall was being lucky enough, along with my lifelong friend David Doherty – grandson of former chairman Jack Doherty – to join the players as they paraded the trophy around town to those supporters who came out to salute their heroes.

With my blue and white hat knitted by my mum Amy – no club shops to buy merchandise from in those days! – off I went excitedly to watch the parade.

The late Davy Pringle (himself a goalscoring Showgrounds legend who was then the club trainer)was friendly with my Dad.

He spotted us and I remember him lifting me out of the crowd to join the celebrating players on the truck parading around town.

What a thrill for a seven year old fan!

It was great to see so many of that team back at the Showgrounds at the weekend.

And to hear their stories from interviewing them in the run-up to the anniversary celebrations.

As age and passing time catches up with us all, some recollections are clearer than others.

What isn’t in doubt is that from speaking to many of the them on Saturday, they thoroughly enjoyed the reunion.

After 50 years following Coleraine home and away through thick and thin, it was a day to remember.

These guys will always be held in legendary status…until our next Gibson Cup winning team comes along to join them!
