Scoreline flattered Cliftonville

A Ronan Hale hat trick in extra time sent Coleraine spinning out of the Irish Cup on Friday night.

Causeway Chronicle columnist STEPHEN LOMAS watched on before giving his thoughts to MICHAEL ANDERSON . . .

To be honest I didn’t think there was a big lot between the teams on the night and the scoreline flattered Cliftonville.

Oran set the team up to make it difficult for the Reds and for long spells it worked because they didn’t create much in 90 minutes.

The difference, especially in extra time, was the quality of player Jim Magilton was able to use off the bench.

Arguably Coleraine had the best chance with Jack Scott. Score that and it’s a different game.

I also thought the two sending off’s were awful decisions.

Sam Ashford’s was never a red and there was always the risk Raymond Crangle would try and even things up which is what he did with Lyndon Kane.

Losing Lee Lynch was a blow. I felt his energy was badly missed when he went off injured.

Now we’re out of the cup, I believe the club has to come up with a long term vision.

Signings coming in can’t afford to be stop gap…we need players coming for two and three years.

On a positive note, I thought Jack Scott had a good game.

It’s not easy coming into that kind of match after not playing for so long but he did well.

I also thought Aaron Jarvis had his best game in a while.

It was also good to see some of the injured players training beforehand and Stevie O’Donnell back on the bench.

Getting the likes of Stevie, Josh Carson and Matthew Shevlin back will be a boost going forward.
