Murphy meets further education sector unions

Pictured in the Minister’s office in Parliament Buildings are (l-r) Economy Minister Conor Murphy; Maxine Murphy-Higgins, NASUWT; Katharine Clarke, UCU; and Martin Cunningham, UCU.

Economy Minister Conor Murphy today met representatives of the UCU and NASUWT unions representing workers in the further education sector.

The Minister said: “I am very keen to ensure further education staff get a pay uplift as soon as possible. Today’s meeting with representatives from the UCU and NASUWT unions was constructive. Further education staff have faced real challenges over the past two years, but have continued to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities to their students.

“Some issues remain to be worked through and resolved between the college employers and the unions, and we are also operating within a difficult financial context. But I hope that we will soon be in a position to deliver a pay award.”

The Minister added: “We also discussed the staff exit scheme. I am currently taking advice on the options available to me for the future of the scheme.”
