Local dance group marks World Down’s Syndrome Day

Today, Thursday marked World Down’s Syndrome Day.

To mark the occasion this year, a North Coast based dance group – featured on Causeway Chronicle before for the excellent work they do – has decided to play their part in raising awareness.

Dance to Enhance has teamed up with Causeway Down’s Syndrome Support Group to create a video campaign entitled “Live Your Story”.

Causeway Down’s Syndrome Support Group has been dedicated to supporting people with Down’s Syndrome and their families and carers since 2001.

They provide support at every stage of life to families based in the Ballymena, Coleraine, Ballymoney and surrounding areas.

“It’s a fantastic Group and we were delighted to help with the video,” said Emma Graham from Dance to Enhance.

“They know that every person with Down’s Syndrome is a unique individual,” continued Emma.

“These people are full of potential and the Group’s focus is always “how can we improve the lives of our children?”

Through fundraising, Causeway Down’s Syndrome Support Group provides weekly activities including communication groups, music therapy, multi-skills, All Stars music group and an Allsorts youth club.

“They also run Halloween, Christmas parties and more,” Emma told us.

The group also influences education and health policy and help change attitudes.

“And of course, we offer each other plenty of moral support, sharing and caring for all!,” stated Emma.

The video campaign was a chance to introduce the members of the group to a wider audience.

A line in the song sings “There’s only one, there’s only one, there’s only one”.

“It is a reminder that there may only be one chromosome difference but these children and young people are living their story with strength, colour and the biggest of smiles regardless of any difference.”

It’s a great initiative and the public will eagerly be waiting to see the video when released.

Anybody who wishes to get in contact with the organisation can do so via their website https://www.causewaydownssyndrome.co.uk/
