Learning curve for young Glens ace Leon

By Michael Anderson

It was a disappointing night for Glentoran in midweek.

The Glens bowed out of the Europa Conference League after a marathon penalty shoot out.

Maltese side Gzira United progressed 14-13 at the Oval, with the match tied at 3-3 on aggregate from the two legs.

Unfortunately for Leon Boyd, it was the teenager – who bravely stepped up twice in the shoot out- whose penalty miss proved costly.

His effort was saved by ‘keeper David Cassar.

But the experience will prove vital for the Coleraine teenager.

The highly rated attacker is the son of well known Darren Boyd who played for Macosquin and Coleraine Crusaders and mum Eleanor Boyd.

A Northern Ireland Under 17 international, former Glens boss Rodney McAree snapped him up from Big Two rivals Linfield.

It was a tough learning curve on Thursday . . . but no doubt better days lie ahead for another talented local lad.
