Jimmy McGonigal Memorial game rounds off a fantastic week of football at the Heights’ Rope Walk

Heights Football Club held their annual Jimmy McGonigal Memorial game at the Rope Walk on Saturday afternoon, with Moyola Park AFC from the NIFL Premier Intermediate League the visitors.

Moyola, the first ever winners of the Irish Cup, were an excellent choice for this important games coming at the end of a fantastic week of SuperCupNI football in the Heights.

And, if then late Jimmy McGonigle were still with us, he would have been over the moon at how his club have progressed and grown over the years. Jimmy, a stalwart of the Northern Ireland Milk Cup since its inception, would have been delighted to see this prestigious competition being played at the Rope Walk. Jimmy was one of the tireless band of volunteers who helped at the tournament over the years.

Jimmy and Bertie Peacock were close friends, and after Bertie passed away, it was Jimmy at a meeting in the West Bann Centre discussing a new youth football club for the area, was first to float the name Bertie Peacock Youths and the rest is history.

However, things have moved on. Unfortunately, Bertie Peacock Youths no longer exist, but a flourishing growing youth football set-up, based at the Rope Walk is – Heights Youths.

Attached to and run by Heights Football Club, they are growing steadily as indeed are the senior team. Here a dedicated group of volunteers are working hard to promote youth football; promote the club, and instil the need for greater facilities west of the Bann on the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

Bringing the SuperCupNI to the Rope Walk was a major coup, and one that would have made the late Jimmy McGonigle a very proud man.

A line that springs to my mind thinking back to Jimmy – One Community, One Club, would be how I would describe the Heights Football Club evolution. congratulations to all the volunteers working in the background to make it happen, and long may it continue.

Causeway Chronicle photographer Aaron McCullough was once again at the Rope Walk to capture the day’s action.
