Honours even at the Showgrounds

at Showgrounds

Coleraine 2 Cliftonville 2

Coleraine maintained their recent momentum today as they build up to an eagerly awaited European Play Off.

They came from two goals down to grab a share of the spoils in atrocious conditions.

Oran Kearney’s men showed great character to bounce back and make it six games unbeaten.

It wasn’t pretty but then again it was never going to be at a wind swept Showgrounds!

Coleraine started brightly and they had a penalty appeal waved away after 12 minutes.

Matthew Shevlin appeared to be pushed in the back but referee Ben McMaster ignored the appeals.

The previously quiet visitors burst into life in the 20th minute.

Rory Brown made a great stop to deny Joe Gormley and Lyndon Kane made a crucial block from the rebound to keep out Chris Curran’s follow up.

Gormley had the ball in the net from the third attempt but he was correctly ruled offside.

However, the Reds didn’t have long to wait to open the scoring.

Sean Stewart’s free kick into the box three minutes later wasn’t dealt with and Paddy Burns was on hand to fire home his first goal for the club from close range.

Cliftonville doubled their advantage after 28 minutes.

Josh Carson cleared Johnny Addis’ header off the line but when the ball fell to the edge of the area, Rory Hale lashed a shot past Brown.

Stevie O’Donnell had a chance to pull a goal back five minutes before half time but he headed Jamie Glackin’s free kick straight at David Odumuso.

The ‘keeper then made a routine save from a Carson drive just before the hour mark as the home side tried to find a way back into the game.

They did just that after 63 minutes and again the impressive Carson was the architect

His run and low cross was palmed out by Odumuso and Matthew Shevlin slotted home the loose ball.

The Bannsiders enjoyed plenty of possession as they chased an equaliser.

But Cliftonville should have made the points safe five minutes from time but substitute Ronan Hale shot tamely at Brown.

And what a miss it proved to be as Coleraine levelled two minutes from time.

There appeared little danger as Glackin crossed from the touchline but Odumuso blundered and somehow dropped the ball over the line.
