Saturday evening’s Afternoon Cup Final, sponsored by Causeway Chronicle produced an exciting game and plenty of goals.

To ensure a family friendly atmosphere, both Draperstown Celtic and Cookstown Youth Reserves provided mascots for then game as well as players for a seven-a-side game during the half-time break.

The first half saw both teams enjoy good spells in attack both with little penetration in front of goal, despite numerous chances at either end.

However, the second half sprung to life when Aaron McGlade opened Draperstown Celtic’s account within a minute if the restart. Finding himself with a clear run at goal, the chance looked to have gone when the ball seemed to run away from him after a challenge by Cooktown keeper McIlhatton, but he regained composure to steer the ball into the back of the net.

Cookstown’s response was immediate. Stefan Donnelly applied the finishing touch past Draperstown keeper Cassidy to make it 1-1 and only two minutes on the clock from half-time.

If both teams failed to find the net in an evenly balanced first half, they were certainly going for the win in the second half. Man of the Match Dean Flanagan restored Draperstown’s lead in the 57th minute and put them 3-1 ahead seven minutes later.

Cookstown were now chasing the game in an effort to claw a goal back. This meant leaving gaps at the back as they tried to convert a few chances of their own. Stefan Donnelly put the game beyond Cookstown after 74 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

In the end, Draperstown Celtic comfortably protected their lead to lift the last trophy of the season, the Afternoon League Cup, sponsored by Causeway Chronicle.

After the game, Dessie Bradley, Chairman of the Coleraine and District League thanked both teams for an entertaining and sporting final and paid tribute to Draperstown Celtic and Cookstown Youth Reserves from bringing team mascots and two 7-a-side teams to entertain at the half-time break.
