Derby despair for ten-man Coleraine

Ballymena United. 3. Coleraine. 1

A disappointing afternoon for Coleraine against their rivals today.

A controversial Matthew Shevlin sending off in the first half didn’t help their cause.

And two early second half strikes from Noah Stewart lifted the gloom for the Sky Blues who began the day rooted to the bottom of the table.

A Josh Carson spot kick briefly raised hopes of a fightback but it wasn’t to be.

And former Coleraine man Robin Gawne delivered a final blow late on.

Coleraine were boosted by the return of Kieran Farren and Jamie Glackin.

And Glackin had a great chance to make it a sensational comeback after just five minutes.

He intercepted a poor Fraser Taylor backpass but with just Sean O’Neill to beat, rolled the ball past the post.

Dean Jarvis and Andy Scott combined well after 17 minutes as the visitors continued to dictate the pace, but the winger’s finish was off target.

Then Shevlin teed up Conor McKendry whose effort was blocked.

Ballymena’s first real threat came on 27 minutes as Taylor’s drive was deflected off Lyndon Kane and over the crossbar.

Coleraine suffered a setback on the half hour mark when referee Lee Tavinder somewhat harshly gave Shevlin his marching orders.

He flashed a red for dangerous play after the striker caught O’Neill whilst challenging for a loose ball.

O’Neill made a quick recovery…blocking a Jarvis drive moments later.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Coleraine still pushed forward and Scott headed a Glackin delivery over the top in injury time.

Ballymena got off to the perfect start in the second period.

Only two minutes had elapsed when  Stewart fired past Gareth Deane after good work by Isaac Westendorf and Taylor.

And after Coleraine failed to clear their lines, teenager Stewart doubled the advantage with a clinical finish on 53 minutes.

It almost got worse just after the hour as Donal Rocks caught Deane off his line but his lob from distance dropped just wide.

The visitors were handed a lifeline on 65 minutes minutes when Glackin was fouled inside the box by Scott Whiteside.

Josh Carson made no mistake with his penalty.

Glackin then had a drive tipped over by O’Neill with referee Tavinder somehow awarding a goal kick.

Oran Kearney’s men continued to press and O’Neill got down to save a long range Carson shot.

Even with ten men, the battling Bannsiders forced the issue but despite their best efforts they just couldn’t find an equaliser.

And ex Bannsider Gawne rubbed salt in the wounds when he smashed home a third in the final minute.
