Crues dampen day of celebrations

Coleraine 0 Crusaders 2

Crusaders ended Coleraine’s recent unbeaten run today.

On a day of celebration with the 1974 title winning team watching on, the current crop of players came up short on the day.

It was a first defeat in nine games for the Bannsiders.

Oran Kearney handed starts to rising young stars Senan Devine and Alfie Gaston, with Josh Carson suspended.

Apart from a Conor McKendry shot over the top, there was little excitement in the opening exchanges.

Coleraine fell behind after 20 minutes after failing to clear their lines.

Rory Brown came and missed a Ross Clarke corner, the ball wasn’t properly cleared and Daniel Larmour pounced from close range.

A fine 26th minute run by Devine almost created a chance for Jamie McGonigle before Robbie Weir’s interception.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser through a Devine drive and Lyndon Kane header.

But it was Crusaders who struck again two minutes before half time.

Kane caught Adam Lecky inside the box and Jordan Forsythe slotted home the penalty.

An early Conor McKendry effort saved by Johnny Tuffey offered early  encouragement at the start of the second half.

But despite seeing plenty of the ball, the hosts struggled to create many opportunities.

The longer the game wore on, the more it had the feel of an end of season encounter in the Spring sunshine.

Only a fine stop from Brown kept out Stewart Nixon’s late header from Clarke’s cross.

It eventually petered out to it’s conclusion with Stephen Baxter’s boys taking the points on his final visit to the Showgrounds as Seaview boss.

* Crusaders manager Stephen Baxter was given a standing ovation from both set of supporters before kick off to mark his 950th game in charge of the Seaview club.
