Competition heats up – but not the weather

The summer running calendar has stepped it up a gear, it’s just a pity the weather hasn’t, and the road races are filling the weeks, and the Hill & Dale Series is approaching its conclusion.

This week saw the purple Springwell vests at the “Stunnerz & Runnerz” in Cookstown, “Out the Line” in Derry, in Narnia at C.S. Lewis Square in Belfast, and running the slopes in the Mournes.

Stunnerz ‘n’ Runnerz – 5th June

Wednesday was ladies’ night with Sperrin Harriers for their ever-popular “Stunnerz ‘n ‘ Runnerz” 5k in Cookstown. Seven Springwell RC ladies made the trip to Tyrone with a great night being had by all.

Springwell RC – 67th Nicole O’Connor 24:57, 77th Sinead Graham 25:25, 87th Christine Bonham 26:44, 96th Janet Patrick 27:20, 146th Ingrid Hamilton 28:49, 180th Pauline Duke 30:12, 191st Linda McMichael 31:28

Hill & Dale: Loughshannagh – 6th June

Arguably the toughest run in the H&D series, but there’s little arguing this race has the best scenery, if you can catch a breath to take a look around.

A clockwise route of the horseshoe this year saw runners head up through the boggy ground to Ott for their first test. Onto Slieve Loughshannagh next and then over to Doan. After shooting around the sandy banks of Lough Shannagh it was then the steepest climb of the evening up Carn Mountain before a fast descent back to the start where spectacular views of Spelga await.

A good night on the mountains saw Adele Tomb finish in 143rd in a time of 1:07:39.

Out The Line 5 Mile Classic – 6th June

The Foyle Valley Athletics Club Out the Line 5 Mile Classic always provides the opportunity for fast times and Thursday nights race was no exception. Continuing his great form Christopher McNickle finished 9th with a personal best of 27:21, Stephen McLaughlin was 29th in 29:33, Ryan Kennedy ran a 30:48 for 41st with Darren Walsh 46th in 31:42. David Shiels ran 32:23 for 53rd and 1st M60 with Catherine Jayne Pinkerton running a personal best of 33:50 for 67th and 1st F40.

C.S. Lewis 5 Mile Challenge – 7th June

A trip to Narnia on Friday evening saw four Springers head to C.S. Lewis Square in Belfast for this popular 5-mile race hosted by Victoria Park & Connswater Athletics Club. The route from C.S. Lewis Square took competitors along the scenic Connswater Greenway to Victoria Park, and back again. Michael Johnson was the first Springer back in 109th with a time of 38:02, closely followed by Lydia Pollock who finished 123rd in a time of 38:29. Andrew Wilmot was 203rd in 42:37 and Pauline Duke outran the lion to finish 340th in 50:56.
