Coleraine 2nd XI win by 10 wickets

Coleraine 2nd XI started the new cricket season with a fine victory against Bready 3rds.

The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first and were soon reeling at 7 for 2 as opening bowler Cameron Block clean bowled the first two Bready batsmen. The experienced Andrew Fleming along with Ross Killeen steadied the ship for Bready and had taken the score to 33 when Block struck again.

The youngster finished with superb figures of 3 for 11 in his spell. Brian Acheson was unlucky to go wicketless in his opening spell as he bowled with great pace and accuracy. First change bowlers Bob Millar (3 for 23) and David Doey (3 for 11) used all their experience to continue taking wickets.

Millar’s yorker to clean bowl Graham Loughlin was a particular highlight. Doey got the prize wicket of Fleming (21) when he enticed him out of his crease with a flighted delivery and wicket keeper Stephen McCartney did the rest with the stumping. Dawood Khan took the last wicket and Coleraine were happy to restrict Bready to 71.

In response openers McCartney and Peter Wallace were watchful against good and accurate bowling from Bready. Wallace started to accelerate and hit a number of fine boundaries despite having to change his bat early on. McCartney was happy to initially play the anchor role but cut loose as the winning line came into sight. Wallace finished unbeaten on 37 and McCartney on 21 as Coleraine reached their target in the 15th over.

Stand in captain Stephen McCartney was delighted with the victory and stated afterwards, “Traditionally Bready are tough opponents and we knew we had to be at the top of our game from the start.

All our bowlers stuck to their task and young Block gave us a great start and the rest of the bowlers stuck to their task well. Peter Wallace got us off to a great start in the chase and it was nice to be with him as we reached the target to secure the win and maximum bonus points. I’m very very pleased”
