Busy weekend for Springwell members

In a very busy week Springwell members could be found in action on the mountains, at the Hill & Dale Race Series, and the Annalong Horseshoe in the Mournes, on the trails, at the Glenarm Castle Challenge, and on the roads at the Brooklyn Half Marathon in New York, and the Strabane – Lifford Half Marathon straddling the Tyrone/Donegal border. As well as this varied selection of runs there was still time for a parkrun or two to be squeezed into this busy schedule.

Hill & Dale: Rocky

On the 11th May Thursday night fell racing made its return after the Donard break. This week’s H&D race was the anticlockwise route of Rocky. On a technical 3.7mile route with over 1,200ft of elevation it was Adele Tomb home first for Springwell in 52:50 (3rd FV50 & 160th overall) with Conor Duffy finishing in 1:00:11 (209th).

While descending from Tornamrock Carolyn Crawford was on hand to deliver first aid assistance to a runner who fell sustaining a suspected serious lower leg injury, highlighting the importance of mandatory kit. Carolyn was able to provide the runner her foil blanket until marshals could reach them. Carolyn finished in 1:02:28 (227th).

Annalong Horseshoe

Saturday 18th May was the latest round of the NIMRA Championship. A long-distance category race, the Annalong Horseshoe hosted by BARF is over 12 miles in distance with over 5,000ft of elevation. Running over 4 of the 5 highest summits in the Mournes, there was no need for the bad weather course as the conditions were much more favourable compared to last year’s wash out.

Colin Brennan had a brilliant run as he finished 1st MV60 in 23rd place in a time of 3:28:04, while Carolyn Crawford’s love hate relationship with the Horseshoe continues with this year, unfortunately ending on the hate side.

Following low lying mist on Cove Mountain and a checkpoint being inadvertently missed, Carolyn called it a day after Slievelamagan.

Born 2 Run Glenarm Castle Challenge

Saturday 18th May saw over 650 runners make the trip to Glenarm Castle for a run around Lord and Lady Antrim’s scenic estate. The weather on the east Antrim coastline was a lot warmer than the rest of the country with temperatures pushing towards twenty degrees at the end of the day’s proceedings. A film production on the estate meant that the traditional courses had to be altered, resulting in a few loops being added, but all the usual elevation was still available to challenge the stamina and test the legs. Springwell RC were represented in two of the three distances available with Janet Patrick placing second in her age category in the 10k event and Shaun Carton winning his age category in the half marathon.

10k – 86th Michael McKeown 57:34, 148th Kate Allison 1:02:46, 152nd Janet Patrick 1:02:49 (2nd F60), 158th Charlotte Hall 1:02:54, 162nd Christine Bonham 1:03:32, 274th Shirley McGaffin 1:24:23

Half Marathon – 44th Paul Laverty 1:50:28, 52nd Adrian Finlay 1:52:28, 103rd Shaun Carton 2:00:39 (1st M60), 109th Rose Lynas 2:01:54, 121st David McGaffin 2:04:21, 129th Jonny Rowntree 2:05:14, 177th Naomi Gordon 2:13:14, 227th Aimee Miller 2:23:44, 230th Andrew Wilmot 2:24:26, 255th Pauline Duke 2:38:48

Brooklyn Half Marathon

Saturday’s Brooklyn Half Marathon in New York saw 28,402 finishers cross the finish line, making it the biggest Brooklyn HM ever. In the crowd doing her bit to achieve this record was Springwell RC’s Jenny Chartres who finished 2931st with an impressive 1:36:56.

Strabane – Lifford Half Marathon

It was an early morning start for Sundays Strabane – Lifford Half Marathon as over eight hundred competitors descended on the County Tyrone town. With its cross-border course, the route takes the runners from Strabane across the River Foyle into Lifford where they turn left and follow the N15 to cross back into Tyrone from Donegal at Clady Village and a race back to Strabane. Springwell RC was well represented at the event where an impressive run from Fiona Prue saw her earn another age category placing with second in her group.

Springwell RC – 55th Brian Moore 1:29:30, 228th Fiona Prue 1:43:22 (2nd F55), 324th Pauline Mullan 1:48:40, 451st Laura Ann Carmichael 1:54:08, 645th Alison Duncan 2:06:34, 689th Heather McLaughlin 2:12:51, 716th Christine Bonham 2:14:23, 722nd Nicole O’Connor 2:16:27, 748th Ingrid Hamilton 2:20:32, 804th Ivan Goldsworthy 2:34:13

From the fog cloaked beaches of the north coast to the sun kissed shores of Larne, and further afield across the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, this weekend saw fifty – three Springers doing their Parkrun thing at fifteen different venues. It was the McPhee ladies who recorded the personal bests this week, as mother and daughter combo Deborah and Ashley raised their game at Portrush parkrun.

“Thank you” to all the volunteers who make parkrun happen. Please feel free to take a turn at volunteering, you’ll be made most welcome.
