BPE/RUSSELL RACING YAMAHA CLAIM MAIDEN WIN AT 2024 BRIGGS EQUIPMENT NORTH WEST 200

The Boyce Precision Engineering/Russell Racing Yamaha team of Richard Cooper and Mike Browne enjoyed a superb race week at the sun-kissed 2024 Briggs Equipment North West 200.

Claiming pole position in qualifying, Richard Cooper took a brilliant maiden victory for himself and the team on the R6 Yamaha in the opening Fraser Homes Supersport race at the Northern Irish meeting on Thursday evening.

The Nottingham racer also finished runner-up in Saturday’s six lap Tides Restaurant Supersport event after a titanic battle with Davey Todd. Cooper’s teammate, Mike Browne, finished in fourth place in both races.

In the first race Cooper managed to avoid a first lap crash at York corner involving Adam McLean and Davey Todd, going on to lead TT stars Peter Hickman (Trooper Beer Triumph) and Michael Dunlop (MD Racing Triumph) home in the four lapper.

Cooper led Dunlop by 1.2 seconds at the end of lap one with Hickman a further 0.5 sec behind. The Nottingham rider extended his advantage to 1.9 seconds on lap two with Hickman less than a second back on Dunlop. Cooper continued to open the gap on his pursuers over the final two circuits, taking the chequered flag by 6.537 seconds. Hickman claimed runner-up spot from Dunlop as Cork man, Browne took the first of his two fourth place results.

“I made a bit of a poor start which worked in my favour as it allowed me to watch the drama unfold in front of me at York Corner.” Cooper said as he savoured the victor’s champagne.

“I nipped through and you take these things when they come your way. I had no pit boards so had no idea how big the lead was but there’s more in the tank if needed.”

Saturday’s Supersport six lapper was a classic as Cooper and Todd swapped the lead throughout the race and Browne battled it out with eventual third place finisher, Michael Dunlop. At the chequered flag just 0.462 seconds separated the leading pair and Browne was 2.65 seconds back on Dunlop.

“This year’s North West 200 definitely delivered all of our expectations.” Team principal, Alister Russell, said as the squad headed home after their successful week.

“The team delivered the machinery and Richard and Mike delivered the results. We are delighted to have claimed our first North West 200 victory against such strong opposition and we intend to build on this performance to achieve even more road racing success.”
