Belfast Athletic win Linda Welshman Memorial Cup

Belfast Athletic won the Linda Welshman Memorial Cup on Friday evening, defeating Killymoon Rangers on penalties after the sides were deadlocked at 2-2 on the final whistle and after extra time.

Killymoon went in front after James Little scored on the 5th minute.
The Athletic hit back with Sean Burns scoring on the 14th minute.
Killymoon went back in front after Matthew McMenemy scored on the 36th minute with the score remaining at half-time.
Athletic had a chance to score from the penalty spot on the hour but the ball struck the top side of the crossbar. Time was then running down when Martin Reilly scored the equaliser on the 84th minute taking the game to extra-time.
No goals were scored in extra-time with penalties deciding the winners.
The hero was keeper for the Athletic who saved the first three Killymoon penalties and Belfast Athletic scoring their first three to lift the Cup.

However, disappointment for Strabane Athletic who lost out to Oxford-Sunnyside 3-2 in their play-off games to decide who got promoted to the PIL.

The Last Cup Final of the season is the O’Gorman Cup a competition dating back to 1896, will be held on Friday, June 7 at Allen Park, Antrim, home of Chimney Corner, kick-off 7.30 p.m. when North-West rivals Maiden City will play Strabane Athletic.

In an evenly contested game no goals were scored during the first half of the game. Strabane went in front after Aaron O’Hagan scored on the 48th minute. Time was beginning to run down when Jordan Bell scored the equaliser setting the game nicely balance for the second game.

Oxford started off early in attack which paid good result in Padraig Judge scoring on the 12th minute. Strabane tried hard to get back into the game but fell further behind when Gary Lavery scored a second goal for Oxford on the 28th minute. Half-time saw Oxford still two goals clear then as time was running out and Own Goal saw Strabane back in the game but alas, they could not get the elusive equaliser leave Oxford to take the promotion Spot in the PIL
