Battle of the Somme annual commemoration held at Coleraine’s Diamond

The annual commemoration has been held in Coleraine’s Diamond, to remember the many lives lost 108 years since the Battle of the Somme.

Alderman Yvonne Boyle who represented the Mayor at the ceremony on Monday 1st July, has laid a wreath at the War Memorial as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives.

Alderman Boyle said: “I am honoured to represent the Mayor today as we gather to mark the Battle of the Somme, in 1916 many thousands of people lost their lives and it is important we remember their sacrifice.”

This annual service is held in collaboration with the Royal British Legion, and attendees fell silent to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice shown over 100 years ago.

The ceremony follows on from the D Day Beacon Lighting Ceremony, held at East Strand earlier this year.
