Ballycastle on top in thrilling County Antrim Junior Shield clash

A thrilling game at the Quay Road on Saturday as Ballycastle United faced BSML Division 1 leaders Connor FC in the County Antrim Junior Shield. An evenly contested game with both teams having a chance or two in the opening exchanges.

The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes when Daniel Laverty intercepted a pass from the goalkeeper and finished coolly to give us the lead.

Thirteen minutes into the second half our lead was doubled when Conor Donnelly broke through on goal and unselfishly laid the ball off to Conleth McCaughan who made no mistake.

Connor threatened to cut the deficit but the Ballycastle defence of Darren McKillion, Philly Greene, Shane Farrelly and Connor McBride held firm, while Eamon Butler made a few outstanding saves. The 2 Bennys in midfield dictated the game while the forward line of Loaf McCaughan, Oran Kearney, Daniel Laverty and Conor Donnelly all worked their socks off. Substitutes Conall Magee and Turlough Connor also played their roles in seeing out the victory.

Connor did pull a goal back in the 6th minute of injury time with an unstoppable strike from outside the box.

Many thanks to Connor FC for a great cup tie with both teams leaving it all on the pitch! Best of luck for the rest of the season!
