Coleraine progress after extra time

Coleraine. 2. Bangor. 1

Coleraine progressed in the BetMcLean Cup this evening but they were made to fight all the way. . . writes Michael Anderson from the Showgrounds.

They needed extra time to finally get the job done against an impressive Bangor.

After successive league defeats in which they conceded nine goals, it was a much needed win.

But they made hard work of it against the Championship side.

It wasn’t particularly convincing and it took a Lee Lynch goal in extra time to finally clip the wings of the Seasiders.

This competition has been relatively kind to the Bannsiders in recent times.

Manager Oran Kearney will be hoping it turns out to be the same again this time around.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action to entertain a sparse Showgrounds crowd during the first half.

Conor McKendry looked lively when in possession, whilst the visitors, with the impressive Karl Devine pulling the strings in central midfield, played some neat football.

It was 35 minutes before the first sight of goal…Shevlin heading a Dean Jarvis cross wide from close range.

McKendry then had a goalbound effort blocked as the home side tried to find a way past a stubborn rearguard.

Darren Cole looked poised to score just before the break but Ben Cushnie for back to make a brilliant goal line clearance.

It was his last involvement as he was replaced at half time by Davy McDaid as the hosts reverted to three at the back.

Coleraine had plenty of possession and  ‘keeper Taylor did well to turn McKendry’s shot past the post just after the hour.

Reece Neale then did well to hook a McDaid effort over the crossbar.

Bangor threatened on the break and Lewis Harrison worked Marty Gallagher on 73 minutes.

Dean Jarvis thought he had found a way through five minutes from time but his deflected shot was well blocked by the alert Taylor.

When Taylor misjudged a cross, Lewis Francis was on hand to clear Shevlin’s header off the line.

Then came a dramatic finale.

Bangor could and should have won it three minutes from time.

First Ben Arthurs miskicked in front of goal, then Seanan Foster had a shot blocked.

The home side thought they had booked their spot in round two in the final minute as Shevlin headed home Lyndon Kane’s cross.

But Bangor levelled in injury time as substitute Arthurs cooly tucked away a penalty to take the tie into extra time.

Lee Lynch put Coleraine in front on 98 minutes with a well taken strike from outside the box.

It proved to be the difference between the teams.
